Optical pumping magnetic resonance in high magnetic fields: Characterization of nuclear relaxation during pumping
نویسندگان
چکیده
The polarization of Xe gas by spin exchange with optically pumped Rb vapor is investigated in high magnetic field. Operation in a high field provides added spectral dispersion via Zeeman shifts of the electronic transitions. This simplifies the physics of the pumping process in such a way as to make it more amenable to treatment with simple rate theory. A relationship between the steady state Xe polarization and the applied laser power is derived which agrees with experimental results. This theory serves as a guide to the manufacture of very high polarizations of Xe gas. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~96!02519-X#

Optical Pumping
Optical pumping uses light to affect the internal degrees of freedom of a sample of atoms in a vapor. These internal degrees of freedom are angular momentum states of the atomic ground state, which are populated when light is absorbed and emitted. This experiment reveals many phenomena of quantum mechanics including angular momentum selection rules, the density matrix, and resonance. Optical pu...
متن کاملBulk nuclear polarization enhanced at room temperature by optical pumping.
Bulk (13)C polarization can be strongly enhanced in diamond at room temperature based on the optical pumping of nitrogen-vacancy color centers. This effect was confirmed by irradiating single crystals at a ~50 mT field promoting anticrossings between electronic excited-state levels, followed by shuttling of the sample into an NMR setup and by subsequent (13)C detection. A nuclear polarization o...
متن کاملPulsed Parametric Resonance Magnetometer
A finite-field optical magnetometer is demonstrated that suppresses spin-exchange collisions by dressing the atoms in a sequence of transverse AC-coupled 2π pulses. In the limit of short pulses, the attainable transverse polarization is unity. On resonance, the dressing field cancels the DC magnetic field, further suppressing spinexchange relaxation as compared to light-narrowed magnetometers. ...
متن کاملOptically induced dynamic nuclear spin polarisation in diamond
The sensitivity of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) depends strongly on nuclear spin polarisation and, motivated by this observation, dynamical nuclear spin polarisation has recently been applied to enhance MRI protocols (Kurhanewicz, J., et al., Neoplasia 13, 81 (2011)). Nuclear spins associated with the C carbon isotope (nuclear spin I = 1/2) in diamond possess uniquely long spin lattice rela...

This experiment is an example of magnetic resonance a class of experiments in which very small energy separations (typically 10−7 eV) of quantum mechanical states are determined by measuring the frequency of a sinusoidally varying magnetic field, which induces transitions between the states. Some examples of magnetic resonance experiments are: nuclear magnetic resonance [1, 8], nuclear quadrupo...
